The satisfaction is in the searching

Romy Suskin

I stumbled across the work of photographer Romy Suskin whose work in portraiture I felt reflected what I hope to achive in my own work. I believe in making photography out of what already is, rather than creating a fiction for my own purposes. Overly-posed works I find unappealing.
The photo which caught my attention was featured in an article about Zak Smith, an artist whom I am also interested. It is a shot of his arm laying across his girlfriend's stomach. What I found evocative about this shot was the personal element, the tattoo on his forearm is a list of all his girlfriend's various illnesses. To me this represented an intimacy that I could relate to, which drew me to the piece... The idea of taking pictures of people being themselves or revealing a hidden fragment of their personality.
